There’s so much going on in Atlanta right now, we hardly know where to begin. Fall 2005 saw the opening of Georgia Aquarium and Atlantic Station (a mixed-use work/play/shop neighborhood), and the acclaimed expansion of the High Museum of Art. And now 2006 is off with a bang as well. Tops on the list are two new boutique hotels The Glenn Hotel, a downtown boutique hotel; and Twelve, an elegant all-suites hotel at Atlanta Station and a slew of new restaurants including Table 1280, Repast, Lobby at Twelve, B.E.D., South City Kitchen Vinings, M!X and Strip: Steak and Sushi, just to name a few. Actually, there’s no end to the restaurant boom in sight more than a dozen are opening in the next several months alone.
Shopping is booming business as well. Atlanta’s two toniest malls, Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square, located diagonally from each other on Peachtree Road, opened their doors to 34 new retailers last year including Juicy Couture, Tahari, Jimmy Choo, Intermix and Tory Burch.
So what’s on Atlanta’s horizon? This year you’ll see Goliath, a gigantic new roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia (opening in April); an additional runway and terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest airport in the country; and a new wing of the Atlanta History Center dedicated to the 1996 Olympics (opening July 15).
